The Team Challenge today has the contestants travelling to the beautiful Great Ocean Road. They will be cooking a banquet for food producers in the region.
As Power Apron goddess, Tracy gets to pick her team first. It’s an all-star team with Emelia, Sarah, Jamie and Ben are her teammates. Ben makes the observation that the best team usually doesn’t win these things and if that happens to them today, he’s in trouble.
Laura’s the other team captain; Amy, Soul Patch, Brent and Renae are her crack squad.
In tonight’s episode, Tracy’s Power Apron means that she goes straight into Immunity. This is huge enough but it gets even bigger. She can pick the other two contestants to join her. It’s the three South Australians, Tracy, Laura and Soul Patch going at it.
The core ingredient for the first round is beer and they need to make a bar snack incorporating it. Laura does what any other 19 year old in the situation would do, she gets hold of as much alcohol as she can. Her dish is chicken skewers and polenta chips.
Tracy’s beer candied bacon and popcorn chicken sliders sound amazing. SP’s also making sliders and capsicum coated in squid ink. Problem is that he’s braising eye fillet and that’s the wrong cut for braising. He only comes to this realisation with 10 minutes left. He ends up frying battered eye fillet instead.
Tracy’s sliders look a mess but eat like a dream. They all empty their plates. SP’s sliders look really bare and his squid ink capsicum looks like a black, charry disaster. He’s not going to move forward. Laura’s chicken skewers are great but it’s Tracy’s fantastic sliders that win.
It’s a big Pressure Test today as Kira, Soul Patch and Jamie must make a croquembouche without a full recipe. Matt tears the recipe into three and Tracy can choose who gets what bit. Jamie’s been practicing choux pastry in the house and to shake things up, Tracy give him the choux recipe and Kira the creme patissier. Kira’s eyes tear up as she knows she’s in major trouble.
The episode begins with the Kira and Sarah in the house discussing what Tracy’s “power” might be, whilst loading the dishwasher. There’s a packet of Finish dishwasher tablets on the counter and we get a shot of a tablet getting loaded in the compartment. You’ve fulfilled your product placement quota there, MasterChef.
The judges meet Tracy in the back room of the MasterChef kitchen. It’s a massive storage facility filled with all manner of pots, pans and kitchen gadgets, providing a brief behind the scenes glimpse of the enormity of the set.
So the big news is that they are all safe this week. No eliminations. Way to keep stretching out the show, 10. Tracy gets to sit out the challenge because she won something. I can’t remember what.
The winning team from today’s challenge will join Tracy in the Immunity fight. It’s a charity lunch for Starlight Children’s Foundation. As usual, the team that raises the most money, wins.
When Curtis Stone walks through the doors, Laura’s jaw drops. She’s got a major crush on the man.
The contestants arrive to find way more Mystery Boxes than usual. In classic MasterChef Australia form, all the eliminated contestants have returned to fight it out for a chance to return to the competition. There’s only room for one so it’s a tough fight. The Top 10 will have to wait a little while longer.
Amy, Laura, Georgia and Renae step into the MasterChef kitchen for a Pressure Test set by MasterChef India host and Michelin-starred chef, Vikas Khanna.
Besties, Laura and Georgia, make a point that neither of them are going home today because it would be devastating. Well, there’s no better day to embrace The Secret, I guess.
Renae says that Indian food is her jam. Amy is also a fan of Indian, having spent some time there to find herself. The Junior MasterChefs are the ones at a disadvantage.
The dish they’re cooking is an elaborate rose tea-smoked chicken tikka masala. When Renae sees it, she’s jumping out of her skin. They only get 75 minutes to replicate the dish.
