The beautiful Ascot House is the setting for this team challenge. Red and Blue teams will duke it out for a 60th wedding anniversary lunch. Byron reluctantly steps up as Blue captain, having never taken charge before. Ben is also reluctantly captain for Red. I say reluctantly because he didn’t want any of the cooks he has on his team.
80 guests will be served a three course meal. It will be alternating plates with the teams cooking 40 dishes each course. They will also need to deliver a two-tiered cake for dessert. Obviously it’s Georgia and Tash baking the cake for Red and Blue, of course, has Emelia but she’s stuck with a clueless pastry chef in the way of Soul Patch.
They meet the delightful couple, Margaret and Eddie, for whom they are catering. They find out their favourite cakes and foods. They will get four hours to prepare the cakes and the other dishes will have 90 minutes of mise en place each.
Soul Patch, Amy and Georgia will go for the Immunity Pin in this episode. They arrive to the kitchen to find three stainless steel briefcases, the kind you see usually handcuffed to some poor dude that ends up losing said hand in a heist movie. They contain a trio of kitchen gadget delights – blowtorch, smoke gun and foam gun. Georgia gets first pick and takes the blowtorch, because that’s what any Dessert Queen would choose. Amy takes the smoke gun and Soul Patch is left with the foam gun. They’ll get to cook anything they want but can only make one trip to the pantry.
Sam, Byron and a teary Laura head into the Pressure Test tonight, held offsite at Nobu. The judges introduce them to legendary Nobu Matsuhisa!
They are tasked with preparing four plates of sushi, without any recipes but Nobu himself will guide them.
He slices surgically precise cuts through the fish and squid that have everyone in awe. His knife skills are poetry in motion.
Our merry band of amateur chefs arrive at the MasterChef kitchen to find their Mystery Boxes filled with healthy ingredients – blueberries, goji berries, sweet potatoes, sardines, walnuts, kale, yogurt and lentils, buzzwordly known as superfoods.
Four very strong cooks head into the elimination today. Brent, Rachael, Ben and Tash will initially bid for their ingedients in an auction. Their currency will be cooking time. Starting with 100 minutes, they will need to bid wisely on the ingredients in order to stay ahead.
It’s team challenge day and Tash offers up the insightful commentary that working as a team is a big part of it. Tonight’s sponsors are Alfa Romeo and Samsung, as prominently shown off on the way to the challenge. “Ooh, Alfa Romeo!” one contestant yells, as they find them parked in the driveway. They jump in and are told on their shiny Samsung tablets that the people they’re sitting with in the car are their teammates. The team that makes the most profit wins and least profitable team goes into elimination.
They’ll be cooking at the iconic Queen Victoria Markets. They have a $700 ingredients budget and head to major sponsor, Coles. Continue reading
Brent, Renae and Rachael enter the kitchen to face off for the Immunity Pin. Brent’s second straight week going for Immunity has shown that the blue collar bloke is a dark horse contender, the same way Andy was in Season 4.
The first round has them naming a plethora of cheeses. Rachael isn’t a cheese person and Renae doesn’t know her cheeses so well either.
After several tastings and smelly moments of cutting the cheese, it comes down to the difficult distinction between Brie and Camembert. Brent incorrectly names it Camembert, even though he could have easily named a couple of other cheeses. Continue reading
